HMRC research and contact methods: update for practitioners
HMRC has published updated guidance on instances where it may contact taxpayers and agents using multiple communication methods, such as letters followed by phone calls, emails, or text messages. This guidance includes specific research initiatives and operational updates scheduled through 2026 and 2027 that may involve your firm or your clients.
What it means for a practice
- Be aware that IFF Research may contact agents and small businesses between 20 July 2026 and 16 April 2027 regarding experiences with HMRC interaction.
- Natcen is conducting research on compliance support for growing businesses until 30 November 2026, which may involve outreach to agents.
- Ensure clients are informed that HMRC contact regarding research or operational matters, such as VAT 126 claims or tax code updates, may now occur through varied channels to improve security.
- Advise clients to remain vigilant against phishing; verify that any unexpected requests for information align with HMRC’s published contact methods.
