Self Assessment deadline information for 2025 to 2026

HMRC has issued a reminder regarding the upcoming Self Assessment deadline for the 2025 to 2026 tax year, noting that there are 100 days remaining until 31 January 2027. The guidance confirms that paper returns are due by 31 October 2026, while online submissions remain due by the January deadline. HMRC has also highlighted new features for online returns, including pre-populated data for Winter Fuel Payments and certain High Income Child Benefit Charge details.

What it means for a practice

  • Clients registered for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax must continue to submit their Self Assessment tax returns and pay any tax owed by the 31 January 2027 deadline in the usual way.
  • Practitioners should ensure that pre-populated information for Winter Fuel Payments and Child Benefit is verified for accuracy on client returns.
  • Clients who have sold cryptoassets must declare gains exceeding the £3,000 tax-free allowance within their 2025 to 2026 tax return.
